Recently, Belmead-on-the-James a little-known African-American landmark was placed on the 2011 List of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places® from the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). The Gothic Revival manor house was built by enslaved Africans and would later be transformed into two private schools for black and Native American students.
